Product description

Special work shop with Yuichi Romita on 26/06, 27/06 and 28/06 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11-17)

In this workshop, the ceramic artist Yuichi Romita shares both the technical foundations and the philosophy he absorbed during his apprenticeship in Karatsu, Japan.

The workshop focuses on creating ceramic tableware inspired by the traditional Japanese Karatsu-yaki approach, throwing off the hump, and using specific techniques and tools.

Instruction will be conducted in English.

Participants will gain insight into the discipline of traditional training, where repetition is not mechanical but transformative. Emphasis is placed on precision, rhythm, and consistency at the wheel, alongside a deeper sensitivity to material and process. With the use of the newly provided traditional tools, students will learn to work with increased speed and accuracy, refining their forms with greater control and efficiency.

The workshop also explores the philosophical principles embedded in Karatsu pottery: respect for nature, humility toward clay and fire, and the intimate relationship between food and the vessels that hold it. Through demonstration and guided practice, students are invited to consider how tableware can become part of a quiet ritual, elevating everyday meals into meaningful experiences.

This course is designed for intermediate to advanced throwers who are confident centering clay and comfortably throwing small cups.

The fee is €695 and includes tuition, clay, slip, bisque and glaze firings, and a personal tool kit for each participant. Students will receive and take home a set including a Guybera, Tonbo, Kiriito, Nameshigawa, and Kanna.

Payment is also possible with Epassi.

Bio:

Yuichi Romita is a ceramic artist of Italian-Japanese heritage who received traditional training in Karatsu-yaki, a historic form of wood-fired pottery originating in Karatsu, Japan. He completed a four-year apprenticeship under Nakazato Tarouemon XIV, part of a distinguished pottery lineage dating back to the 14th century.

During his apprenticeship, Yuichi developed a deep understanding of working with natural clay, wheel techniques, slip application, and wood-firing in a Noborigama kiln. His training emphasized not only technical discipline, but also the philosophy and craftsmanship central to refined functional tableware.

Now based in Malmö, Sweden, Yuichi produces wood-fired tableware for fine dining restaurants and select retailers across Europe.
