Kintsugi master and urushi (natural lacquer) artist Mitsumi Irahara will explain how urushi is used to repair broken ceramics with the method of Japanese kintsugi. This is a practice exemplary of the wabi sabi aesthetic, highlighting an appreciation for old objects through the use of natural lacquer and ornamental finishes. Mitsumi will also explain about natural urushi lacquer and the history of kintsugi. After the lecture Mitsumi will demonstrate how to add metal powder to the seams. In the workshop, participants will use ancient makie techniques to decorate their own chopsticks. The workshop will be held is in Japanese with English interpretation.
The evening’s price includes tools, working materials, chopsticks, coffee, tea, and VAT.
